Career Opportunities in Municipal Law Enforcement

Becoming a Bylaw Enforcement Officer or Inspector is a challenging and rewarding career. Bylaw Enforcement Officers are appointed by their municipal council under provision of The Cities Act, The Municipalities Act, or The Northern Municipalities Act to enforce local municipal bylaws or other provincial statutes. Serving their community, Bylaw Enforcement Officers may enforce bylaws relating to:

  • business and trade licensing
  • zoning (land use)
  • property or community standards
  • noise abatement and control
  • building code
  • fire protection
  • parking and traffic
  • animal control
  • signs and advertising
  • environmental protection

Municipal law enforcement authorities can be further enhanced under the Community Safety Officer Program with the Ministry of Corrections, Policing, and Public Safety. In addition to bylaw authorities, a Community Safety Officer (CSO) is appointed as a Special Constable and may enforce items such as:

  • Moving Traffic Enforcement
  • Weights and Dimensions
  • Commercial Vehicle Enforcement
  • Alcohol & Gaming
  • ATVs and Recreational Vehicles
  • Various other provincial statutes
  • Select Criminal Code violations such as theft under $5000 or mischief that are not in progress

Community Safety Officers/Special Constables must complete the Saskatchewan CSO Induction Training Course and physical fitness test in order to receive their Special Constable appointment. Prior experience and learning may be considered for exemption from the CSO Induction Training with approval from the Ministry.
